Listen, Recognize, Repent |The Life of Job Pt. 3
I'm glad you've joined us for the final part of our three part series entitled The Life of Job. To catch up, read part 2 here. Part 3 will be based on Job chapter 41 and 42.
Most of the book Job consists of him and his friends arguing back and forth. Then in chapter 38, God begins to speak to Job through a storm. This conversation continues through to the end of the book. Within these chapters, I have noticed a couple things in this conversation that can apply to the way we deal with difficult times. The first thing that Job does is listen to God.
When we are in a hard situation, God has thoughts and wisdom that He would like to share. Job listened to Him. God said, "Listen now, and I will speak; I will question you, and you shall answer me."
The next thing Job did was recognize the power, position, and authority of God. God says to him, "Who then is able to stand against me? Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me." And Job replied, "I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted." I think that when we recognize God for who He is, we are able to also put ourselves in our proper place - a servant of the Lord.
The last thing Job did was he repented. Repentance is not apologizing and asking God to forgive your sins, although it can include that. Repentance is turning in a completely different direction. It's turning away from sin and turning towards God. Job said, "Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes."
Although Job endured a lot of hardship, difficulty, and pain within his lifetime, his story has a happy ending. He had many sheep, camels, oxen, and donkeys. He had 7 sons and 3 daughters. He lived long and was able to see his children grow up and their children to the fourth generation.
